OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 is a global textile safety certification that means a fabric, thread, garment, trim, or accessory has been independently tested for harmful substances.

In simple terms: it tells customers the textile product has been tested for chemicals that could be harmful to human health. OEKO-TEX says the certification applies to textiles and accessories from all stages of production, and every component of the item must meet the standard’s requirements.

For example, on a shirt, testing can include:

  • The fabric
  • Sewing thread
  • Printed or dyed areas
  • Buttons, zippers, labels, elastic, and trims
  • Any coatings, finishes, or treatments

The standard checks for many regulated and non-regulated substances, such as certain dyes, heavy metals, formaldehyde, pesticides, phthalates, PFAS-related substances, and other chemicals. The limits are updated regularly and are based on intended use, skin contact, saliva contact, respiratory exposure, and scientific health data.

OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 has four product classes:

  1. Class I — Baby and infant products
  2. Class II — Products with direct skin contact, like shirts, underwear, bedding
  3. Class III — Products with little or no skin contact, like jackets
  4. Class IV — Home/decorative textiles, like curtains, table linens, carpets

The closer the item is to sensitive skin, the stricter the requirements are.

Important distinction: STANDARD 100 does not automatically mean the product is organic, recycled, sustainably made, or ethically manufactured. It mainly means the finished textile product has been tested for harmful substances. OEKO-TEX has other labels, such as MADE IN GREEN and STeP, that cover broader sustainability and production-facility standards.

Our kind of work such as apparel, hats, merch, and printed goods — OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 is useful because it gives customers confidence that the blank garment or textile material is safer for skin contact and has passed a recognized chemical safety standard.
